Discord's file size limits
Free Discord accounts can upload files of up to 10 MB. Nitro Basic raises the limit to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB. Server boosts can raise the limit for everyone in that server. The limit applies to each file, not to a message, so you can send several files of under 10 MB together.
If you're on a free account, compressing is usually much easier than paying for a higher limit — most images and PDFs can be brought under 10 MB without visible quality loss.
Compress images for Discord
Photos from phones and cameras are often 3–12 MB each, and PNG screenshots of large monitors can be bigger still. To shrink them:
- Open the image compressor on MiniFiles.
- Drop in your JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF files — several at once is fine.
- Keep the default 80% quality, or lower it for smaller files.
- Check the new sizes and download.
A typical 6 MB phone photo comes out at around 1–2 MB with no visible difference. For screenshots, Compress PNG reduces the colour palette while keeping text sharp. Converting photos to WebP with JPG to WebP makes them smaller still, and Discord displays WebP images inline.
Compress GIFs for Discord
GIFs are one of the least efficient image formats, so animated reactions and clips quickly go past 10 MB. Use Compress GIF: it optimises every frame with gifsicle and keeps the animation. Lower the quality for a smaller file.
If a GIF is still too big after compression, reduce its pixel size or trim frames in an editor first — a 480-pixel-wide GIF is a fraction of the size of a 1080-pixel one. For long clips, a short MP4 is far smaller than a GIF of the same length.
Compress PDFs for Discord
Scanned documents and PDFs with photos are often 15–50 MB. The PDF compressor recompresses the images inside the PDF while keeping text and vector graphics sharp; scanned PDFs often shrink by 70–90%. If the PDF is still over 10 MB, split it into smaller parts and send them separately.
Compress videos for Discord
Videos are the files that most often go over 10 MB: a minute of 1080p phone video is easily 100 MB. Open Compress video for Discord, drop your MP4 or MOV and keep the Under 10 MB · Discord option: MiniFiles works out the bitrate from the clip's length, scales it to 720p and saves an MP4 that Discord plays inline.
Short clips fit comfortably; for longer ones, trim to the part you want to share, remove the audio or choose 480p. As a rough guide, about a minute of 720p fits in 10 MB. The video is compressed by your browser's own video encoder, so it's never uploaded.
Why compress in the browser instead of an upload site?
Most online compressors make you upload your file to their server first. For a meme that hardly matters, but screenshots often include usernames, private messages or personal details, and PDFs can contain anything. MiniFiles compresses files locally in your browser, so they go straight from your device to Discord without passing through anyone else's server. It's free, with no account needed for up to 10 files a day.
