How JPEG compression works in MiniFiles
- Processed on your device. Compressor.js re-encodes the photo with your browser's own JPEG encoder. Nothing is uploaded.
- Adjustable quality. The default is 80%. Lower it for smaller files, raise it to keep more detail. If re-encoding would make the file bigger, the original is usually kept.
- Privacy-friendly metadata. EXIF data, including GPS location, is stripped unless you choose to keep it. Photos are auto-rotated using their EXIF orientation so they stay upright.
- Size cap. Photos wider or taller than 4096 pixels are scaled down to fit; WebP output is free, while custom dimensions and PNG output are Pro features.
- Free to use. Without an account you can compress 10 files a day; a free account removes that limit. No payment is needed for JPEG compression.
When JPEG is the right format
JPEG is built for photographs and other images with many colours and soft transitions. It does not support transparency, and repeated saving at low quality adds blocky artefacts around sharp edges.
For screenshots, logos, diagrams or images with a transparent background, keep them as PNG and use the PNG compressor. To compress JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF files in one batch, use the image compressor.

Frequently asked questions
Does MiniFiles upload my JPEG files?
No. JPEG compression runs entirely in your browser using Compressor.js and the browser's built-in image encoder. Your photos are never sent to a server.
Will JPEG compression reduce image quality?
JPEG compression is lossy: the photo is re-encoded at the Quality setting you choose (80% by default, adjustable from 10% to 100%). At the default most photos look the same to the eye; lower values give smaller files with more visible artefacts.
Does MiniFiles remove EXIF data and GPS location?
Yes, by default. EXIF metadata — including camera details, date and GPS location — is removed from the compressed file. Turn on “Retain EXIF data” in the image settings if you want to keep it.
Are large photos resized?
Photos larger than 4096 × 4096 pixels are scaled down to fit within that size, keeping their aspect ratio. Smaller photos keep their original dimensions. Pro users can choose a different maximum size.
Can I compress JPEG for web use?
Yes. Smaller JPEGs load faster on websites and fit more easily within email and upload limits. You can also convert the output to WebP for free, which is often smaller still.
Compress more formats
MiniFiles also supports PNG, WebP, GIF, and PDF compression — all locally in your browser.
