How GIF compression works in MiniFiles

  • Processed on your device. gifsicle, the standard GIF optimiser, runs as WebAssembly in your browser tab. The GIF itself is never uploaded.
  • Animation kept. Every frame, the frame timing and the looping are preserved, so the result is still an animated GIF.
  • Lossy optimisation. The Quality setting (80% by default) controls how many colours are kept and how much pixel detail is simplified — lower means a smaller file.
  • Same format. By default the output is a GIF with the same dimensions. Converting to WebP (free) or JPEG/PNG (Pro) keeps only the first frame.
  • No payment needed. GIF compression is free. Without an account you can compress 10 files a day; a free account removes that limit.

When a GIF is still too big

GIF is an old format: it stores up to 256 colours per frame and compresses poorly compared with modern formats. If a GIF is still over a limit — Discord's 10 MB for free accounts, for example — trim frames or reduce its pixel size in an editor, then compress it again.

For a website, a short MP4 or animated WebP is usually a fraction of the size of the same GIF — and MiniFiles can compress video too. For still images, use the image compressor, which handles PNG, JPEG and WebP too. More tips in how to compress files for Discord.

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing a GIF keep the animation?

Yes. MiniFiles compresses GIFs with gifsicle, which optimises every frame and keeps the animation, frame timing and looping. The result is still an animated GIF.

Is my GIF uploaded to a server?

No. gifsicle runs as WebAssembly inside your browser tab, so the GIF is read, compressed and saved on your device. Its contents are never sent to a server.

How much smaller will my GIF get?

It depends on the animation. GIFs with many frames, photographic content or dithering usually shrink the most; short, flat-colour animations are often already compact. Lower the Quality setting for a smaller file.

Will the GIF lose quality?

GIF compression in MiniFiles is lossy: it reduces the colour palette and simplifies pixel data. At the default 80% quality the difference is usually hard to see; very low settings can add grain or banding.

Should I convert my GIF to WebP or a video instead?

For websites, animated WebP or MP4 files are usually much smaller than GIF. Converting a GIF to WebP in MiniFiles keeps only the first frame, so use it for static GIFs and compress animated GIFs as GIF.

MiniFiles also supports PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF compression — all locally in your browser.
